Hazel meets Augustus for the first time at the support group. Augustus invites her over to watch a movie he recommends. Hazel accepts the invitation.

Augustus and Hazel start having countless phone calls and text messages due to their love of the book, 'An Imperial Affliction'. They end up spending more time together. 

 Augustus and Hazel email van Houten asking how the book ends. 

Augustus uses his wish to take Hazel to Amsterdam to find out about the ending, so they will meet van Houten in person.

Hazel is rushed to the hospital due to the sharp pains in her head. Doctors figures out she has serious pneumonia. 

Hazel is cleared to go to Amsterdam. Hazel, Augustus, and Mrs. Lancaster fly to Amsterdam.

Hazel and Augustus go to a fancy restaurant that van Houten has paid for. Augustus wore his tuxedo that he would wear in his funeral. They drink champagne and had a good time. 

Augustus and Hazel find the truth about van Houten.  Van Houten had no intention of telling them what happens at the end of the book. He is cruel to them. 

 Lidewij, van Houten's ex-assistent, takes Hazel and Augustus to the Anne Frank house. They share a kiss during a video at the house. 

Augustus and Hazel have sex.  

Augustus tells Hazel his cancer has returned. Hazel is deeply hurt by the news.  

Isaac and Hazel have a pre-funeral for Augustus.  

Eight days later, Augustus dies. Van Houten shows up at the funeral and tells Hazel about the book and how his daughter died because of cancer.  

Hazel reads the letter Augustus wrote to van Houten.  

Setting:  

This book is taken place in Indianapolis, Indiana. Indianapolis is where most of the story takes place. The typical weather is cloudy. It also takes place in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. Amsterdam is where Peter van Houten lives. Hazel, Augustus, and her mom goes here.
