Hazel Grace Lancaster is forced to attend a support group for children living with cancer. Isaac, a friend of Hazel, attends the support group also. He brings a close friend of his, Augustus 'Gus' Waters, to one of the support group meetings. After the support group, Hazel and Augustus has a talk for a while. Augustus recommends a movie and asks Hazel to come over to watch it. Hazel's mom, Mrs. Lancaster, has been waiting for her to make friends, so Hazel decides to go with Augustus. At Augustus's house, Hazel introduces Augustus to her favorite book of all time, 'An Imperial Affliction'. Due to the book, Hazel and Augustus start having countless text messages and phone calls, which causes them to spend more time with each other.
Long story short, Augustus uses his wish from the "The Genies" for Hazel and him to go to Amsterdam to meet up with the author of 'An Imperial Affliction'. They both want to meet the author to know what happens to the characters of the book. However, Hazel woke up one morning with sharp pains in the head, and she is rushed to the hospital. The doctors see that she has serious pneumonia. After her release, she realizes the love she has for Augustus. Due to her appearance in the hospital, her doctor isn't sure if she should go on that trip with Augustus. Until one day, she gets cleared and she can go on the trip.
In Amsterdam, Hazel and Augustus goes to meet van Houten. However, van Houten is cruel to them and did not answer their questions. Due to his behavior, his assistant, Lidewij, takes them to the Anne Frank house. At the house, Hazel and Augustus share a kiss to an applause. Later that night, they have sex in Augustus's hotel room. Afterwards, Augustus tells Hazel his cancer has returned. Hazel is deeply hurt by the news.
Shortly before Augustus dies, Isaac and Hazel has a pre-funeral for him. Eight days later, Augustus dies. Augustus gave Hazel infinity within the number of days. Their love story is beautiful.

"'I’m in love with you,' he said quietly.

'Augustus,' I said.

'I am,' he said. He was staring at me, and I could see the corners of his eyes crinkling. 'I’m in love with you, and I’m not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and

I am in love with you.'"

(Green 169)

“...But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I’m grateful.”
